![]() ![]() Use the forceps to gently take your butterfly and put it on top of the window screen, and seal the container and keep it closed for at least 24 hours or more. Then, place your window screen or wire mesh on top of the paper towels, which acts as a barrier between the butterfly and the wet paper towels to make sure it won’t get too wet. If you forget about it and leave it in there for weeks, the preservatives will stop the butterfly from disintegration. Now, take your pine-sol or Lysol and apply a couple of drops to the wet paper towels, which acts as a mold inhibitor to prevent mold from growing on the butterfly. First, spray the folded paper towel with clean water to make sure it’s thoroughly moistened (not so soaking wet) and then put them to the bottom of the plastic container. We are going to use the supplies gathered previously to build a relaxing chamber.Īs its name suggests, a relaxing chamber is a place where the dries butterfly can get loosened up. So, my butterfly is frigid, then what? What it needs is to be reanimated or relaxed before we position its wings. But, I wouldn’t leave it in there too long, for more than a couple weeks because it will eventually dry out. If your butterfly is freshly dead, but you can’t get to it right away, put it in a glassine envelope and pop it in the freezer for a few days until you can get to it. So, you can’t move it (it might even break) or do much of anything with it at all. This is because after the butterfly dies, its blood and internal organs will start to dry up, and the butterfly becomes very stiff. ![]() However, you do need this part if the butterfly you found died a few days ago. If your butterfly just died, you can skip this step as your butterfly’s wings are still flexible and easy to move. The first step is to move the butterfly’s wings into the position you want for display. Step 3: Relax or Reanimate Your Butterflies Now, you have got everything you need for spreading and spinning the butterfly, then let’s get started. You will also need some paper towels, and antiseptic, such as Pine-Sol or Lysol to prevent mold growth. You might need an airtight plastic box or glass jar with a lid as well as a piece of window screen or wire mesh to fit in the bottom of the container. There are also a few other things that you may or may not need, depending on the condition of your butterfly. You also need a pair of forceps, which you can find in most drug stores, to manipulate the wings. Cut two long strips, and they should be enough to cover your styrofoam board. You also need some wax or tracing paper to protect the delicate wings from rough surfaces. You don’t have to use insect pins, you can use any dress or straight pins (or even sewing needles), but we do recommend using these, especially size 2, which is the best size for pinning insects.Īlso, you will need a piece of styrofoam, the size of which doesn’t matter, but it should be bigger than your butterfly or moth. Once you have found that perfect butterfly or moth, what you need then is some insect pins. ![]()
